The World of Freelancers
Spreading your reputation
You’re a monster! And that’s okay, because everyone else around you is a monster too. In the world of Freelancers, the humans have all disappeared and monster-folk rule the world. From trolls to goblins, dwarves to elves, mousers to stilt-kins, and everything in between. You’re in charge baby and nothing can hold you back. Well, besides money. But don’t worry, you’ve recently signed up to become a Freelancer. A mercenary-for-hire ready to take on any and every job that will advance your standing in the Hub. So you’ll be swimming in a pool of gold in no time. Probably.
Players will pick a species sheet and a job sheet to create their character. There are 9 species and 21 jobs to choose from with a possibility of 189 custom characters with backstories you help create!
Oh yes, the beloved Hub is where you call home now. The center of the known world. A discombobulated city, powered by old steam pipes and cogs that change the configuration of the city every fifty minutes or so. The King lives in an old power plant at the center of the ritzy Gilded District and sets laws and decrees based on his interpretation of the toots and whistles from the underground pipes. Sometimes those laws are helpful to you and your fellow down-on-their-luck citizens, but most of the time though, it’s just more taxes that favor the nobles.
The Hub Gilded District. Where all the rich and famous folk of the Hub live.
But you aim to collect so much money and reputation that tax laws can’t touch you! And the way to do that is to join a freelancing party and take on quests that let you travel around the Hub and the surrounding spokes, collecting treasures and titles. The more titles you have the more well-known you are. Become legendary enough, and you’ll get to carve your names on the pipes of the capital city, never to be forgotten.
The player with the most titles at the end of a successful quest, adds their name to the pipes of the city, located at the back of the rulebook, forever mocking the lesser players.
Titles can be given whenever you complete or fail a particularly impressive feat. Notoriety is more important than success. Perhaps you’ll help a supermodel pick out the perfect outfit for her runway show and earn yourself the name “The Fashionista.” Or maybe you’ll give a knight the wrong weapon in a duel and be called “The Knight Slayer.” You’ll meet a slew of interesting characters along your travels who may help you earn yourself a new nickname.
You’ll also frequent taverns and other locations that allow you to tell the tale of your deeds to the public. A little bit of role-playing, if you will. If you impress the group, your fellow freelancers will grant you a title, and their respect, finally!
Each title gained will be either chaotic or lawful, which in turn reflects your Freelancer’s reputation. Your party’s overall alignment at the end of the quest will help determine the story’s outcome. So make your choices carefully since every decision you make matters!
Gain titles by filling your pockets with gold and leveling up your character.
